The Beaverton School District requires that students earn 23 credits for a high school diploma. The trimester schedule gives you the opportunity to take five .5 credit classes each term, or 7.5 credits each year for a total of 30 possible credits earned during a four year course of study. This gives you plenty of room in your schedule for required and elective courses. Please note that students from other parts of the country with whom you may compete for entry into highly competitive colleges will often be able to provide a high school transcript which shows they have taken 28-30 credits.

Make certain that you pay close attention to the graduation requirements outlined. Make a plan that includes all graduation requirements!

Courses are divided into two types, required and elective. Required courses are those a student must pass in order to meet the State of Oregon and Beaverton School District requirements for graduation. Elective classes are designed to build skills in areas of study that meet student needs for vocational and college admissions, as well as the pursuit of individual interests.

When selecting elective choices, students should consider elective subjects carefully and select alternate classes in case there is a conflict in your schedule, or in the event that we are unable to offer the course due to insufficient enrollment.

The student and their parents or guardians should review the Career Academy and four year Mapped Academic Plan & Profile each term, updating it as necessary. Part of this long range planning should involve the selection of a Career Academy which you have decided you would like to focus, or the IB program. Selecting your elective choices from among those offered in your identified Academy prepares you for meaningful in-depth study in areas of interest to you and gives you the opportunity for future career internships. If you have areas of interest that are not listed in the guide, consult with your guidance counselor or Skytime Advisor to look at ways to customize your plans.

Although certain courses are required, you will still need to read the course descriptions before filling out your planning worksheet. Courses that meet for one term earn .5 credits. Courses that meet for two terms earn 1 credit and must be written into two planning spaces. Courses that meet for three terms earn 1.5 credits and must be written in three planning spaces.

The Program Planning Guide and forecasting sheets will be distributed in Advisory. Counselors will meet with students on an individual basis when needed, and they will collect all forecasting forms. In order to be ready for a conference, students should have with them their forecasting sheet which includes the following information:

  1. All desired courses listed by title and designated course number.
  2. Parent signature which is requested to indicate parental involvement in the selection of courses.
  3. A minimum of three alternate selections, listed in order of preference.
  4. Where required, teacher recommendation / signature to verify completion of prerequisites. Without a signature, you may be denied placement in the class.

Prepare your schedule of courses carefully. Schedule changes after registration will be extremely difficult to make because courses are staffed based on student registration data. Changes are generally only allowed in the event that a student is placed in the wrong course level. In some cases, students will not be able to make a level change until the end of the first trimester after 12 weeks. To change a schedule a student must complete a schedule change form with the student's counselor, obtain a parent's / guardian's signature as an indication of his/her approval, obtain signatures of the teachers involved in the change, and return the schedule form to the counselor for a final decision.
